Our Story: Exploring Nature’s Hidden Marvels
Welcome to the Paint Rock Forest Research Center, where our story unfolds amidst the enchanting Southern Cumberlands Plateau and Ridge and Valley systems. This breathtaking landscape shelters the greatest diversity of tree species and aquatic life within the Appalachians, with Paint Rock Valley supporting double the oak species found in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Here, isolated from ancient glacial impacts, amid moderate elevation and diverse topography, life thrives, buffered from climate extremes.
Our journey began with a vision to unlock the region’s secrets and understand its long-term climate resilience. The Nature Conservancy’s Sharp Bingham Preserve became our canvas, boasting an unusually diverse and intact forest, hinting at the vital role it plays as a climate refugium. As we embarked on our mission, we recognized the exceptional opportunity to study every aspect of the ecosystem, from undisturbed forests and soils to the intricate network of caves and underground streams nourishing the Paint Rock River – one of the nation’s most biologically rich waterways.

Our Vision and Values: Nurturing Environmental Stewards and Scientific Excellence
At Paint Rock Forest Research Center, we’re driven by a three-fold mission. Firstly, we’ve established a groundbreaking 50-year research plot covering hundreds of acres in the Sharp Bingham Preserve. We carefully identify, catalog, and regularly census every stem over 1 cm, encompassing over a hundred thousand shrubs and trees. This invaluable data will reveal the inner workings of forests, species survival mechanisms, and the impacts of climate change, guiding conservation plans for a resilient future.
Secondly, we devote ourselves to cultivating a new generation of scientists – “Wilson’s Army” – who possess intimate knowledge of ecosystems and microbiology. Our stair-step program opens doors for minority and underprivileged students, leading them from high school to top graduate programs, fostering diversity in the scientific community.
Lastly, we envision the development of a major conservation area spanning 12 million acres of contiguous forests from Kentucky to Alabama. With a focus on 500,000 acres around Paint Rock Valley, this conservation endeavor aligns with Dr. Wilson’s ambitious Half Earth program, setting an example for other regions to follow.
Our values are deeply ingrained in our work – understanding the forces shaping this land, promoting diversity, and scientific engagement. We foster transparency, unity, and ethical conduct as we mentor, advocate, and facilitate novel scientific work, creating a culture that celebrates excellence.

Our Impact: Pioneering Forest Research and Nurturing Tomorrow’s Leaders
Paint Rock Forest Research Center stands as a beacon of progress and knowledge. Our meticulous research and data collection paint a vivid picture of how forests work, adapt, and survive. Insights gained from these slopes will not only determine the future of North American forests but will also pinpoint which regions and species demand urgent conservation efforts.
Beyond research, our commitment to training the next generation of scientists is making a tangible impact on the scientific community’s diversity and inclusivity. By supporting minority and disadvantaged students, we’re sowing the seeds for a brighter, more equitable future for the environmental sciences.
